[00:01:09] David Martin: Yes, sir. Bang Thailand. Beautiful day out there.

[00:01:12] Gabe Ratliff: Mm. I can see it out the window.

[00:01:15] David Martin: Yes, sir.

[00:01:16] Gabe Ratliff: So I love to start in with, I mean, we, we were just, just to kind of let people know we were just having our weekly check in and just kind of like circling up on, you know, how things are going with the new program. We'll jump into what that means in a minute. But you know, just checking in with each other and, you know, sharing how that's going, strategizing and talking about, you know, what we're gonna do moving forward and how we're gonna tighten things up and switch things up and, and just keep working the experiment that is our health program.

[00:01:52] David Martin: Definitely.


[00:01:54] How do you explain what you do as a health coach?

[00:01:54] Gabe Ratliff: I'd love to start with, how do you explain what you do as a health coach to people?

[00:02:03] David Martin: How do I explain what I do? What I do is I try to bring out the best in someone. Through health and wellness. Most people, they have the answers. Most people, they intellectually know the information. That's most people, they intellectually know the information, but I find that my position in their journey is to not only provide a plan of action, but to course correct, kind of like their knowledge base, right?

[00:02:40] David Martin: Some people may know what it's like to eat healthy, but they don't know how to track their nutrients. Some people may know how to work out or even work out themselves, but they don't have a plan for progression and know how to track. So what I do is I take more of a holistic approach and I help people get on a plan of action that is in relation to their lifestyle.

[00:03:12] David Martin: So, how do we create a healthier lifestyle based on what you do, where you're at your age, your demographic, how do we create a, a, a optimized lifestyle that works best for you for your single person? Not this cookie cutter type of situation, you know,

[00:03:33] Gabe Ratliff: oh, I know it well. Well, and, and I mean, that's, that's what really, just to kind of share with people listening. Like that's what really hooked me about this. I mean, we've known each other for years, but it really got to this cross section in my life where all the things hit my lifestyle, what I was looking for, the mindset shift, the commitment I was ready to make.

[00:04:06] Gabe Ratliff: And then I happened to see, you know, what you've, you'd been posting which you are just magnificently consistent. and it was just in my, it was coming into my universe and I was like, man, and you were just in my orbit. And it was exactly where, I mean, it was like, the universe was just like, you guys are meant to get back in each other's orbit, you know?

[00:04:30] Gabe Ratliff: And it just, it just hit cuz I remember when we first started talking, I mean, I was in a totally different place. Totally different place coming outta depression, just not feeling good about myself, not looking good in my own mind. And you know, and I was overweight. I was outta shape. I wanted to change my relationship with food.

[00:04:55] Gabe Ratliff: And you mentioned that about macros a little bit ago and that was, that was one of the things we got right into. And it's been just a complete game changer with what you've tr what you've taught me and what you've like. You've taught me to fish. Which is like so empowering and you continue to teach me how to fish better.

[00:05:18] David Martin: that's what's up. I appreciate that, man. I appreciate that. You know, the thing is Gabe is like most people in regards to like macros per se, most people think that. Eating cause I don't, I like to stay away from diet because I feel like diet is like contextually is like you're depriving yourself or something.

[00:05:41] David Martin: And I don't think deprivation is the way to succeed.

[00:05:45] David Martin: So in terms, in regards to macros, like some people may not be eating unhealthy. They just are not eating the proper amounts of certain foods. So that's what is really a game changer about like tracking your macros and like eating for nutrition rather than calories and things of that nature.

[00:06:07] Gabe Ratliff: yeah. And I mean, I, I, I know. One of the things we've talked about several times in our calls is just, just how, if you don't track you, you, if, if, if you're, if if there's no, if you don't measure, you don't manage. And if you don't track, you don't have an understanding for how much you're eating. It's something you have repeated over and over to me about that.

[00:06:31] Gabe Ratliff: It's like a, it's a, it's a struggle for people that they don't even realize they have, because they don't understand how much food actually equates to.

[00:06:40] David Martin: Yeah, yeah. You're right. I mean, it's, it's insane. I actually, I actually had a gentleman ask me for advice last night and he's like, I don't know what's going on. I've been working out six days a week for five weeks and I haven't been able to lose much. Can you take a look at my cuz he has been tracking, so he has data that I can then look at and we can strategize cause he has data without data.

[00:07:02] David Martin: What am I supposed to do? So I looked at his macro breakdown. He's having like 2300 calories. And you know, even though he's eating whole foods, if you're a, if you have a sedentary lifestyle, if you have a, a desk job, which he does, I. You know, what are you fueling? Let me put it like that. What are you fueling? You go to work and you sit down and you're at a desk and, you know, you have like a, an online type of situation and you're having 2300, like, what are you fueling? You know? So it's yeah. It, yeah, exactly. Right. Yeah. Yeah. So it's important. It's important for people to educate themselves in that, in that regard, like I'm eating, but for, for what

[00:07:52] David Martin: you know, for what you know

[00:07:54] Gabe Ratliff: Yeah. Cuz you're, you're getting up, you know, you're, you're walking around making your coffee, getting dressed, you know, getting ready, doing all those things. Then you walk to your car and then you sit in your car and you drive. Right. And then if you're in that kind of a, an environment, if you're not living in a city where you can walk around or walk and, and at least be doing like a Metro or something and like still being active and then you just get out of your car, walk into your building if you're, if you are going into the, into the office.

[00:08:25] Gabe Ratliff: And, and if you're not, you're literally just walking into your office and working

[00:08:30] David Martin: Exactly. I mean, you, you don't need, yeah. You don't need all that, that fuel for those types of activities. So a lot of people just to give a little bit of game, a lot of people go to these calorie calculators and they put in, you know, oh activity level. Oh, I, I work out, you know, for like this gentleman, oh, I work out four or five times a week.

[00:08:53] David Martin: I'm active. Actually, if you ever use a calorie calculator active is for like professional athlete level. So for the most part, like it would be sedentary. Even for me who works out like five times a week, very active lifestyle, I would put in whatever is above SED. So like if you use a calculator, a calorie calculator just know to whomever's watching this active is for someone that's like an athlete, like someone that that's their profession.

[00:09:27] Gabe Ratliff: Wow. I did not know that. Wow. That's really good to know. Yeah. And cuz they don't really stipulate that. Right. They're just like, yeah. Put in your calculation.

[00:09:35] David Martin: There you

[00:09:36] Gabe Ratliff: where you're at. And people are like, people always fudge that shit anyway.

[00:09:40] David Martin: Oh, for sure.

[00:09:41] David Martin: For sure.

[00:09:41] Gabe Ratliff: totally active.

[00:09:43] Gabe Ratliff: when the doc, when the doctor's like how many drinks do you have a week?

[00:09:48] Gabe Ratliff: Two to three

[00:09:50] David Martin: Yeah,

[00:09:51] Gabe Ratliff: a night.

[00:09:52] David Martin: For real. Exactly. Exactly,

[00:09:55] Gabe Ratliff: an hour.

[00:09:57] David Martin: Exactly. Exactly.

[00:09:59] Gabe Ratliff: I know, I know. Y'all

[00:10:02] Gabe Ratliff: I

[00:10:02] David Martin: human nature, man.

[00:10:03] Gabe Ratliff: Totally.

[00:10:04] David Martin: nature. I know

[00:10:05] Gabe Ratliff: I mean it's, it's totally the it's totally what's happening on Instagram, right? Everybody's like, this is how awesome my life is.

[00:10:12] David Martin: yeah.

[00:10:13] Gabe Ratliff: Really. I don't know. Let's see.

[00:10:17] David Martin: No. That's why my, my relationship with Instagram has been very interesting. I mean, you and I have discussed it many times, but just like, you know, just wanting to be more authentic and not creating content for the sake of creating content, creating content that is more in alignment with the purpose, you know?

[00:10:40] Gabe Ratliff: preach each brother. Oh man. And it, it, I mean, it's, I, I see it's been hard for me cuz to just digress for a second before my dad got sick, I was just on this constant hamster. I'm sorry, content, hamster wheel and constant . And when I had to stop, I realized man, I'm burned out. I didn't even know I was burnout until after I stopped because I had to, to go take care of him and you know, the, the, you know, all everything's happened over the last couple years and everything.

[00:11:16] Gabe Ratliff: But as I kind of had to take a break from it and stepped away, you start to realize how much people are doing, like how much people are just especially like when YouTube and seeing the YouTube creator content, creators that have these just, I, I mean, I did video production for over 10 years and to do the level of what people are doing.

[00:11:39] Gabe Ratliff: And like, they may or may not have a team. And especially like, if they're like starting to get going and they haven't quite developed a team yet to take some of that off to be doing all of that work

[00:11:52] David Martin: It's a

[00:11:52] Gabe Ratliff: in house, like so many people do and to be doing that, that just plus plus you're doing, if you've got YouTube and then you've also got social media, like the other social media, like Instagram and all these other and you get tos and all this stuff.

[00:12:07] Gabe Ratliff: Man. It's just, it's crazy how much people are, are focusing on that and are, and, and are just so active, just the activity without necessarily being intentional. So I love that you are that way about it. And that you are also, so, like I said, magnificently consistent. I love it. Cuz you're just like, this is my mission.

[00:12:33] Gabe Ratliff: I'm

[00:12:33] David Martin: yeah, yeah, no, I mean, that's, that's what it's all about. Like defining the purpose, you know, defining your purpose.


[00:12:41] What was the defining moment in your life that made you choose to be a coach?
---

[00:12:41] Gabe Ratliff: Speaking of which the next question I have is what was the defining moment in your life that made you choose to be a coach?

[00:12:54] David Martin: The defining moment in my life. I gotta take it back to Denver, Colorado.

[00:13:01] David Martin: I was going to, yeah, I

[00:13:02] David Martin: was going to the university of Colorado Denver and I was working at the Oxford, which is a spa salon and fitness center at the at the time the sort building downtown. And I got my personal training certification and I had just also like, I think I was about to graduate.

[00:13:24] David Martin: Nevertheless I was training someone. Her name is Tina moody, incredible person. big shout out if you see this incredible, incredible person. And she decided to work with me and the defining moment was when we started working together, I was able to help her lose, man, I kid you not, I can't remember the exact amount of weight, but I, I think it was like, 25 pounds in like two months, two and a half months.

[00:14:00] Gabe Ratliff: Hmm.

[00:14:00] David Martin: And this was just with just consistent activity. I hadn't even, I haven't even reached into the macro game yet. Like the whole food science thing. That's I mean, that's probably, I started really diving into that maybe five, six years ago, like how food really plays such an in, you know, integral role into exercise.

[00:14:24] David Martin: But for me, that, that was a defining moment for me, because I was like, I can really help people. Like I know how to help people. And then from that point, the methodology of how to help people was then established. I started establishing what is my method? Like, what do I think is best to help someone. In a dynamic fashion, I mean, it's evolved through the years because that was, that was some time ago.

[00:14:55] David Martin: That was like more than 10 years ago or something like that. But that was my defining moment, Gabe, where I was like, man, I can, man, I can help somebody like this. So

[00:15:09] Gabe Ratliff: Mm, that's awesome. I love it. I love it.


[00:15:13] How has that choice changed your life?
---

[00:15:13] Gabe Ratliff: Well, my next question is kind of a follow up to that. How has that changed your life?

[00:15:23] David Martin: You know, it's changed my life in a variety of different ways. I would say first and foremost, you gotta practice what you preach. For me, I don't ever want to have someone do something that I Haven.

[00:15:41] Gabe Ratliff: here, here.

[00:15:42] David Martin: So like even in our work together, I mean, granted, you know, the, the content that you see as me. Right.

[00:15:48] David Martin: So, you know that I've done it. So in a way I, I have a, I have like, kind of like, you know, a respect for that. Like the, everything that I've done me, I track my macros, me, you know, I've never, I I've tried keto. I've tried being a vegetarian, I've tried paleo, I've tried low carb. I've tried the zone diet, like everything that I would ask someone to do in my practice, I have tried myself.

[00:16:18] Gabe Ratliff: Mm-hmm

[00:16:19] David Martin: like, I think that's kind of I think that that kind of, you know, that's been the biggest part being, being the example, being the example, you know, like, and also. Within what I practice and what I preach. It only creates a more solid foundation to practice what I preach, you know?

[00:16:50] Gabe Ratliff: Yes, sir.

[00:16:51] David Martin: Cause you don't wanna be a fraud.

[00:16:53] Gabe Ratliff: You don't there's enough imposter syndrome going around

[00:16:57] David Martin: Exactly. Yeah. And I mean the internet, you know, the internet is a great vehicle for that. The internet is a great vehicle for that for, you know, the imposter syndrome and things of that nature. Fortunately I've never felt that way because it's like once again, I, I feel like I have enough information and knowledge to truly, you know, help the people that I want to help through this purpose of health and wellness.

[00:17:22] Gabe Ratliff: yeah. Yeah. And then, and then you do get the slim OS who take the, they actually get into that whole realm of fraud and are just like using online entrepreneurship. Get, you know, pulling over on people and, and that just completely gets, especially when you're dealing with people who, when this is involving like, you know, mental you know, mindset, physical issues, right.

[00:17:51] Gabe Ratliff: And like stuff that's like really primal, you know, core, deep level things. I mean, that's one of the things I've loved about our conversations is how, and we've, we've talked about this at length before about like how just great, how great it is to be able to get into the mental game, the mindset aspects, and not even just the, you know, whether it's the, the, the workouts and the physical side or the, the macros and the, the nutrition side, also that kind of in the middle that's like in here of like the mental.

[00:18:25] David Martin: Yeah, true, man. I mean, it's, as, as I get older, I'm starting to realize the mental aspect is so important. And within that mental aspect, like I've had to unlearn so much, you know, like you're downloaded. When I was raised, you know, I'm fortunate enough to have both my parents and they're still around, which is a blessing.

[00:18:54] David Martin: And they did their best and they do their best. But a lot of the ideas that I have now developed are not their ideas and those ideas were their ideas before. So I've had to unlearn a lot of structure that was given to me and like develop what I think of the world, how I wanna move. And as far as mindset's concerned, when we initially spoke, when we, when we were discussing the aspects of the program, it wasn't necessarily like, yeah.

[00:19:30] David Martin: Okay. Workouts. Okay, cool. Yes. I can develop something for you. Yes. Eating. I can develop, but like, man, like why, you know, what was the deeper meaning? And we, we really like targeted and like locked into like, what's the greater, what's the greater goal. And then that's, that's what you're talking about. As far as the mindset and mind frame, you know,

[00:19:51] Gabe Ratliff: Yeah.

[00:19:52] David Martin: So really, really what's what's that greater purpose to reason why you wanna make these positive changes.

[00:20:02] Gabe Ratliff: And it's totally the, the, the north star through it all, because one of the things that I, I wanted to bring up that I feel like it's just, it was, it was, it was a, a key moment in our relationship with you as my coach was when you got really vulnerable with me and were like, look, man, I don't love to work out every day either.

[00:20:28] Gabe Ratliff: And that just was such a level, like, it just was such a level set for me to, to, to not feel less than right. To just feel like we are, we're both these humans that are doing the work and not every day is gonna be a cakewalk. You know, and it's, it's not gonna be this smooth, sail line you're gonna be in the right.

[00:20:56] Gabe Ratliff: You know, it's not every day. Is that mindset gonna be there for you some days, especially when you're fatigued. Right. And when you're working out, there's a fatigue that occurs. And even if you're building habits, like life habit, like we talked about this when we were both traveling, right? Like, like life happens and you have to deal with it, but, but you have these tools that you're able to access, which you've taught me and which you've been developing for years, but having access to these, I'm able to make stronger, positive, productive decisions when those things occur.

[00:21:34] Gabe Ratliff: And, and I, I remember we were talking about when you were traveling, you were like the struggle's real bro. And I'm like, yeah, dude, , it's

[00:21:41] David Martin: yeah, yeah. And I mean, it BR it got, it got as simple as like, you know, portion control, you know, like the foundation, those types of things, it got as simple as, you know, I'm doing just a hundred pushups today. You know what I'm saying? It, it got that simple. You know, it got to like, I just wanna make sure that I'm hydrated today. Like those. So, you know, those foundational, like health practices, that's how it got to, or that's the way it was when you know, I was traveling, you know, it's just like once again, portion control. Okay. Let me hit a hundred squats. That's the workout for today? You know, because this is like, once again, it's a, it's a lifestyle man.

[00:22:27] David Martin: It's like in my practice and how I see things and what I, how I try to help people. I want them to create a healthier lifestyle. Like, you know, I've had, I've had some of the people that I work with. Like, oh man, I, I missed a workout. I need, you know, let, I wanna make it up. There's nothing to make up.

[00:22:44] David Martin: Just, you know, eat sensibly and let's hit the next one. There's nothing to make up because hopefully you will establish this habit for the rest of your life of activity, eating sensibly and taking care of yourself.

[00:22:59] Gabe Ratliff: Mm.

[00:23:00] David Martin: up.

[00:23:01] Gabe Ratliff: Mm.

[00:23:02] David Martin: You know,


[00:23:03] How has that choice changed other people’s lives?
---

[00:23:03] Gabe Ratliff: So this seems like a great segue to the next thing I wanted to ask. How has this choice that you've made changed other people's lives? The people that you've been serving, do you have any good stories that you could maybe share, or that, stand out about how the work you're doing has changed their lives?

[00:23:24] David Martin: you know, I think for me, like I mean, I've had, I've had situations in the past where, you know, a variety of different people and it's all kind of different reasons, but I think, I, I think the health professional side of me always takes kind of most Pride, if you will. And when somebody feels better, like physically like say they have knee issues and they've lost some weight and now they don't have any knee issues.

[00:23:55] David Martin: Say they had like crazy shoulder impingement that like, I mean, they could barely rotate from their shoulder back, but now they're completely free because we are able to, you know, holistically treat their shoulder, you know say they had crazy forward rounded posture, but now because we improve their posture, their breathing better.

[00:24:18] David Martin: Right. Cause I mean, you know, just throughout the day, for the most part, it's, it's difficult to breathe deeply hunched over. So that type of stuff, now that I'm more inclined for that, to that I should say, but don't get me wrong. I, I do. When somebody has expressed, like, they feel like spiritually strengthened as well.

[00:24:40] David Martin: Like they're, they have more energy, they have more vitality. They're communicating better with the people around them, all coming from the confidence that they've gained from putting in positive action.

[00:24:52] Gabe Ratliff: Mm.

[00:24:53] David Martin: So I would probably say like, those are, those are the, the biggest things. Cuz I recently helped someone and they were able to lose 17 pounds in six weeks. And it's not necessarily the weight. It's just how people are now interacting with them. He was just like, man, like, you know, I feel like I feel good. Like the way people are interacting with me is different because it's not necessarily people are interacting with him differently. He's just at a higher frequency.

[00:25:28] David Martin: So it feels that way because he feels better about himself inside.

[00:25:33] Gabe Ratliff: Mm.

[00:25:34] David Martin: So

[00:25:34] David Martin: that's the type of stuff that hits me,

[00:25:36] Gabe Ratliff: Ugh. Yes, yes, yes. And yes. I mean, it's, it's totally because you and I, I wanted to, to share this as well. I've taken this when I'm coaching clients, the work that we do, I implement it, right. Because I can inject. That positive energy from how I feel about the work we're doing. And I also even take it further and will reflect to them what you've established with me about just doing the work and what it, what it, that, again, it comes back to that level set of like, not every day, it doesn't matter what you're doing.

[00:26:13] Gabe Ratliff: It doesn't matter if, if it's whatever your craft is, it's the same thing with work like fitness and exercise and taking care of yourself and, and like putting yourself top of the top of the list. Like you are your own priority. And so many people don't, they have so many thing, so many other things on the top of that list and they're somewhere down, maybe 10, 11 things down and they don't even know it cuz they haven't even asked that question.

[00:26:44] Gabe Ratliff: Where am I on my priority list mentally, spiritually, physically, financially, emotionally. And. That's one of the things that's been so powerful for me in our work and was part of what I wanted to, you know, have you onto this show to, to dive into this conversation and share with others, because it's just, it's so powerful when you also come from it, from this place of, it's not this drill Sergeant kind of idea.

[00:27:11] Gabe Ratliff: It's a lifestyle. It's, it's not this, like, you're less than I'm this amazing influencer coach, you know, sexy mofo kind of, you know what I'm saying, person, it's

[00:27:24] David Martin: Well, I

[00:27:25] David Martin: mean I don't know about that last part might be true. You know what I'm saying? So You know, I know that last part though. I like that last part like that,

[00:27:37] David Martin: you know?

[00:27:38] Gabe Ratliff: jet magazine, BR

[00:27:40] David Martin: yeah. You know?

[00:27:47] Gabe Ratliff: but you know, you don't come off with that. Like patronizing, you know, none of that's there it's this very real, you know, you just proved it in that example. Right. Of like, oh man, I wanna make up that workout. And I remember when, when I had some of that stuff come up and I was like, so staying on it and vigilant.

[00:28:07] Gabe Ratliff: And you're like, dude, you're, you're doing it. You're doing the program. It's cool. And you're traveling

[00:28:13] David Martin: yeah,

[00:28:13] David Martin: yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean,

[00:28:18] Gabe Ratliff: bro.

[00:28:19] David Martin: yeah. And you do, and you did it so well, you did it so successfully. And the way you did it, like I've told you before, the way you did it inspired me, man, because it's just it's okay. So it's, it's easy to do. It's also easy not to do, but it's incredibly hard to take the action to do it.

[00:28:45] David Martin: You know what I'm saying? So it's easy to do. It's easy not to do, but it's hard to take the action to do either or, you know what I'm saying? So it's like, especially when you're, you know, you're on a trip like that. So

[00:29:02] David Martin: once again, I have to give you major props, cuz that was, that was dope. And that's why I had to, I had to give you perspective, like man, like there's no need to have any angst around anything because you're doing it.

[00:29:14] David Martin: Like you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, doing the hard part, which is the action, you know?

[00:29:20] Gabe Ratliff: Yeah.

[00:29:21] David Martin: The workout and the eating is easy because you have the plan, the hard part's the action.

[00:29:27] Gabe Ratliff: And that's what I'm really trying to drive home to people that are engaging with this, because it really that there's, it, it, it, it really does come back to so much in life. And that's the thing I love about this work that we're doing and that, and what you're doing as a coach, because it's that, that leadership and that, that ownership and walk in the walk, like you said, right?

[00:29:53] Gabe Ratliff: There's, there's no fraud there because you walk the walk. I mean, you're also trained Mo tie. I see your stuff all the time. I mean, and that is, you can see that devout passion to a beautiful martial art that is also like it. And it's just, it's just adding on to the layers of what you into your program and like the lifestyle that you

[00:30:18] David Martin: Yeah. And I mean for like how I see it, like, so with my Mo Thai practice, my boxing yoga you know, and then like strength conditioning and stuff like that. Like, it's now shifted for me where it's like, I, when I first began working out personally, it was for aesthetics, right? Like I wanted to, to look a certain way and I mean, I still do.

[00:30:43] David Martin: And I don't think there's anything wrong with that. However, I've now taken the, the mindset shift of, I wanna practice yoga and I wanna do these different body, weight movements and exercises and lift weights and stuff like that for like Mo tie more. So it's like being able to apply. So I think that's that's where a lot of people kind of like get, they get a little bit twisted, meaning like.

[00:31:14] David Martin: If your activity is for you to travel the world in a more healthy manner to uplift your quality of life, if your activity is so you can play with your kids and not be scared to pick them up and like hinge over, like if your activity meaning like working out and things like that are for a purpose of, you know, being able to hike a 14 or you're gonna derive more joy from it. You know? So like making, trying to, and I mean, that's, that's how I see my fitness now. Like my fitness is okay, let me, you know, does this, does this make me stronger at yoga? Even though I believe for me personally, yoga is more about breathwork. That's why I personally do it, but like, is it gonna make me stronger and more tied?

[00:32:05] David Martin: You know, like, so it's like, I feel like my fitness now has a more of a, a target. And obviously just feeling better in my normal everyday life.

[00:32:15] Gabe Ratliff: Yeah. Yeah. And I mean it, and it, and it just, I mean, to, to just tuck touch on that, I mean, that's been something that we've been having conversations about and that I started to implement in my mornings also to just help with, by being more active in the leveling up of the work as I've gotten stronger and you've evolved the program to, to accommodate.

[00:32:38] Gabe Ratliff: Also wanting to be like stay limb and, you know, be stretched out and more flexible so that I'm also helping to not get injured with increasing, you know, the weights and all of those things. And so it's been you know, and it's just, it's just, you just feel better, man. It's just a really great way to

[00:32:59] David Martin: Yeah,

[00:32:59] Gabe Ratliff: day.

[00:33:01] David Martin: yeah.

[00:33:02] Gabe Ratliff: the hype

[00:33:04] David Martin: Thank you. Yeah. I mean it is. It's like, I just feel, I feel like And like working out. I wanna make this distinction too. Okay. I mean, what I develop is different. Like, it's, it's a plan of action, right? It's like, you're, you're definitely working out and there's a plan of action. But working out in my mind is also stretching is also, yoga is also swimming.

[00:33:31] David Martin: It's also mobility work. It's also badminton. It's also tennis. It's also riding your bike. It's also, you know, it like working out to me is like, I, you know, I work out, I work out five to six times a week. That doesn't necessarily mean I'm in the gym, cling and banging. You know what I'm saying? I could be doing Mo Thai.

[00:33:53] David Martin: I could be doing Western boxing. I could be doing yoga. I could be doing mobility. That's working out to me. So I think it's people would be best inclined to broaden their thinking in regards to what a workout is.

[00:34:08] Gabe Ratliff: here, here. And that's one of the things, I mean, I love that you brought that. I thank you for bringing that up because that's one of the things I look so forward to and, and actually really got me reinvested in going even further with the yoga was the, the mobility workout and how it's that merger of the stretching and the strengthening and that active recovery.

[00:34:29] Gabe Ratliff: You know, three days of getting to it, you know, and then you get, I get that Saturday of that Mo and it's like, I, I really cherish that time because it's like on Saturday, it's the weekend. It's, it's, it's like this wonderful me time. That's, it's a workout, but it's not, you know, quite as intense, It's different, It feels really interesting. And I, I highly recommend people either engage with David about it or research it a little bit, cuz it really is interesting to get into this like mobility workout and how it kind of like changes the game and makes it, it, it makes it it's it's it really is an interesting thing.

[00:35:12] Gabe Ratliff: As I just said about the it's active recovery, it's stretching, it's strengthening and it, and, and it's, and it's, it's not that like, oh, I don't wanna do it. It doesn't, it really takes that away, which actually makes it even easier to transition to. When you do get back the next week and it's like, okay, well now it's time to get back to work.

[00:35:30] Gabe Ratliff: It's like a reward. It's like this wonderful reward. And it doesn't, you know, and I think the thing I like about it, I would say as a guy and the working out part that it kind of has this it's, it's not as yoga as much, and it's not as workout as much. It's this wonderful kind of in between. And it kind of the way, because it marries the two, it just feels, I don't know, it's this uniquely interesting different type of workout.

[00:36:07] Gabe Ratliff: it's, I didn't even know it existed and it's this

[00:36:11] David Martin: Do most people don't man. And I got into it. Man, it's been maybe about four or five years now that I've been into like mobility. I mean, I've been doing yoga for a long time long time now, but like you said, it's just this beautiful marriage between YOIC style movements and strength, style movements.

[00:36:39] David Martin: It's such a beautiful marriage between those two and like, you know, how it helps your joints, tendons and ligaments, because I mean, you know, obviously with weight trading, you, you keep shortening the muscle, but like to lengthen the muscle through strength, it's, it's, a beautiful


[00:36:57] What’s the most important thing people should do today if they want to improve their health?

[00:36:57] Gabe Ratliff: Mm, here, here. Well, I wanted to kind of switch gears a little bit and, and ask you some questions that can maybe relate to people, checking out the show, like, like what's the most important thing that people should do today. If they want to improve their health, what what's something that you could recommend today?

[00:37:17] David Martin: Man the most, like, I would just say the most important thing. I mean, a few things come to mind automatically, but like go for a walk, try to get your, try to get your 10,000 steps in. That would be something that you know, make a little bit of time for yourself. Also the thoughts that come from taking a walk, it's great.

[00:37:41] David Martin: You know, try to do it, try to do it with like, you know, no music, if you can, or if you need music, just, you know, go for a walk, you know, go for a walk in the park,

[00:37:50] Gabe Ratliff: Go listen to this podcast.

[00:37:52] David Martin: Yeah, listen to this podcast while taking a walk and, you know, let some of these gyms bless you. But also, you know, I would say hydration, just making sure you're hydrated, you know, making sure you're flushing your system and drinking enough water.

[00:38:09] David Martin: I, a lot of people my brother was recently out here. And I was like, man, you don't really drink water. And he was like, I don't really like the taste. And like, for me, that was like, that took, I was taken aback because I don't really drink water for the taste of water. Like I don't associate taste to water. I just, I just drink water. I just hydrate. So, I mean, I would say probably, you know, getting in 10,000 steps, going for a walk and I mean, you, like, you don't even need to measure. I know I said 10,000, but like just go for a walk, you know, that would be first, second would be, make sure you're hydrated, you know, make sure you're hydrated. Third would be, if you have a work from home or you have an office situation, you know, take some time. Or even if you're like in a cubicle take some time every, you know, every other hour stand for about 30 minutes, you know, try to try to put in like, just try to implement little bit here and there, healthy habits. But going for a walk would probably be my, my, my number one gig

[00:39:16] Gabe Ratliff: nice. So

[00:39:18] David Martin: at lunch. Go for a walk at lunch. Okay.

[00:39:21] Gabe Ratliff: yeah. Before, before you go eat,

[00:39:23] David Martin: yeah, like go for a walk at lunch. Like, I don't know where you're at in the world, but just try to do some, try to do something you know, active at lunch. If that's for the person that does nothing, like, you know, try to like go for a walk at lunch instead of, you know, sitting down more to eat, you know,

[00:39:38] Gabe Ratliff: I was actually gonna ask you, so say, you know, for, for, because so many people are sedentary these days be because of like just the type of work people are doing. And, and just having to get things, you know, if, if people are do, like, we were talking earlier about like content creators and things like they're sitting in front of a laptop, cutting their videos or whatever, whatever that might be working on their Instagram reels or whatever it might be. There are, you know, there are a lot of creatives that are gonna be listening to this and they are, you know, gonna be in Adobe, gonna be in whatever, working. And I'm curious, like what, what we, we kind of touched on this earlier about the, the nutrition side of things in a sedentary lifestyle, right? You were talking about a gentleman that works with you, who he was like, ah, I'm working out five, six days a week, but I'm, you know, I'm not losing what's going on. And you're like, well, Hey, it might be whole foods, but you're eating 2300 calories a day. So what, what are maybe what's maybe something that somebody could do if they do have kind of a sedentary lifestyle, but they want to maybe like, they're, they're down to walk. But they want to change something about what the, the fuel that they're putting in themselves. What, what are something they could.

[00:40:55] David Martin: Okay, this is probably. One of my main states. I actually practiced this quite a bit when I went to the states. So you could use the Palm method. So you could do one of your Palm is your meat portion. Two of your palms is your vegetable portion and a small cup of your Palm is your starch portion. That would be one way of going about it. Now you could also just do portion control. Meaning if you say you get a sandwich at lunch, just eat half of the sandwich, say you go out to lunch and you get a Chipotle burrito bowl, half of the burrito bowl, or, you know, put it together in a way that's maybe a little bit more protein dominant, a little bit less carb dominant. But I would do this rather. So in, in this regard I would eliminate, so I would make it, I would make it hard for me to, to, I guess, fail if you will. So I just would not have snacks, you know, I would try to eat more whole foods and I would try to watch my portions. I would stay away from, you know, sugary beverages and things of that nature. Most people already know this information. They just don't practice it. Like, you know, you know, inherently drinking a mountain. Dew is not great. Right. I mean, you know, that having a big cookie from the convenience store is probably not the best source of energy. Right? So like, Let's act like we don't know, you know, let's act like let's stop acting. Like we don't know better. Let me say it like that. Let's stop acting like we don't know better, you know, have a piece of fruit as a snack limit, what you eat, you know, I mean, you know, if a portion is big, if it comes out and you're like your eyes get big and you see this big platter of food, you know, ask for a box portion, some of it out right away, and then eat the portion that's sensible.

[00:43:17] Gabe Ratliff: mm.

[00:43:18] David Martin: And also like, try not to have snacks in the house. Try not to have sweets in the house, make it easy for yourself to not fail by eliminating it from your vision, from your view, from what you buy,

[00:43:33] Gabe Ratliff: Yeah.

[00:43:34] David Martin: you know,

[00:43:35] Gabe Ratliff: Yeah. I, one thing that was coming up for me when you were talking about that is, is that, that adage about when you're in a grocery store to stay around the outer

[00:43:46] Gabe Ratliff: ring, right. Don't don't, don't do

[00:43:48] Gabe Ratliff: the, yeah. And That's totally true. It's totally true. Pretty much every grocery store, you go into the outside, it's all produce and,

[00:43:59] David Martin: no that's facts

[00:44:01] Gabe Ratliff: Protein, all those things.

[00:44:03] Gabe Ratliff: Yeah.

[00:44:04] Gabe Ratliff: that.

[00:44:04] David Martin: what game on another level, like the thing is, is with the outside of the grocery store, which you're completely right. Which is awesome. But. Thing is, is people. They buy the fresh food, they buy the fresh ingredients and then they don't prep. They don't, they don't prepare. So it's like a lot of that goes to waste.

[00:44:22] David Martin: So they're more inclined to get the process stuff that will then last longer because they didn't have, you know, of the, the little bit of the discipline that it takes to like prep these fresh items to last a longer period of time. So it's like, it's great to stick to that outer edge of the grocery store, but you also have to have the wherewithal to, you know, these things so that, you know, they do last because obviously they'll go bad, fairly, you know, in a quickly,

[00:44:50] David Martin: so.

[00:44:51] Gabe Ratliff: Yeah. I that's really, that's, that's a great, great point. It got me thinking about How there's some, I also started to get into as far as like my partner and I, we started to look at like ways to extend the life of produce and things. And like something we've talked about, you and I in our sessions is like, oh, Hey, you know here's some things you could do, like a like the, the yogurt and protein powder pudding, right?

[00:45:27] Gabe Ratliff: Where you get this like really power packed, flavorful, tasty, sweet type dessert or snack. But it's just super pumped with like protein and healthy fats and things that are good, like probiotics and things that are good for you. And it's like really, really tasty. And it's like putting

[00:45:49] Gabe Ratliff: and it's like, oh, okay,

[00:45:50] Gabe Ratliff: cool.

[00:45:50] Gabe Ratliff: I don't have to get jello. I can do this. And it's actually like a really great, you know, either book end to the day or snack in the middle afternoon or whatnot, plus you get

[00:46:00] David Martin: You it's like, yeah, I think it's very important to understand, like, What are you getting from this? And I'm talking about eating. So it's like, you go out and you get, say you get a, a burger, right. And it's a fantastic burger, but like, and there's nothing wrong with a burger, I I would, would urge people when you do eat those types of things, sit back after 20 minutes of eating it, like, how do you feel food is supposed to give you energy?

[00:46:34] David Martin: Food is how we stay alive for the most part. Right. A big part of us living is like the fuel that we ingest. So for whomever's watching, I would just say, you know, your next meal, even if it's healthy, per se, even if it's healthy, like how does it make you feel? If it's giving you energy, a really big sign that it's doing something good for you.

[00:46:58] David Martin: If you eat and you feel like you want to go take a nap, that's probably not the best source of fuel for.

[00:47:06] Gabe Ratliff: Yeah.

[00:47:07] David Martin: You know,


[00:47:09] If you had a magic wand and could change anything related to peoples mindsets related to a healthy lifestyle what would it be?

[00:47:09] Gabe Ratliff: So if you had a magic wand and could change anything related to people's mindset related to like a healthy lifestyle, what would it be?

[00:47:24] David Martin: if I had a magic wine and I could change people's mindset about health and wellness, I would probably, I would put in their mind that it's so pragmatic. It's very much a practical way of life. You don't have to do, like, I would say that. With all like so much around fitness and health and wellness, there's a mystique that like, it's something where you have to adjust so much of your life to do it. So I would put in their mind that it's not something that you have to change. All these different things. All you have to do is make slight adjustments. It's much more practical than people think we're meant to move. We're meant to eat whole foods. we're we're meant to do these things as human beings. So it's like, oh God, I, I gotta work out.

[00:48:38] David Martin: If you're thinking like that, I would suggest that you really look internally as to your nature, us as human beings. It's our nature to move. You know, being sedentary is actually. Out of alignment with our nature. So going back to the question, I would put it in people's minds that it's much more practical and they don't have to, they don't have to change as much as they think to fall in line with a healthier way of life.

[00:49:19] Gabe Ratliff: Mm. Yeah. And, and that, and I've learned that. Working with you. I mean, it's to, it's totally been true. It's it's really just the little it's it's the, the, tools staying on the program, just doing the work, having the accountability, for sure. That's one of the big benefits of the coach of having you as a coach and just having a coach.

[00:49:43] Gabe Ratliff: Is that accountability, the support, the encouragement, the reminders of, Hey

[00:49:48] David Martin: yeah,

[00:49:48] Gabe Ratliff: you don't have to make up anything. It's cool.

[00:49:52] David Martin: yeah.

[00:49:53] Gabe Ratliff: It's cool. You missed a day. Enjoy it.

[00:49:56] David Martin: And real quick, Gabe, real quick. Let me, let me hit people with this too. Accountability doesn't mean that someone, well, for me, let me put it for me personally. It doesn't mean that I'm like, why didn't you do this? You should have done this. Why that's in my mind like that that's accountability, but it's a very low level version of accountability.

[00:50:19] David Martin: The version of accountability to me in my mind is reminding you of the commitment that you made to yourself. You know, that's my version of accountability. Like, Hey bro, this is the commitment that you made. I'm a team member. We are partners in your success. I'm only letting you know I'm gently reminding you of the commitment that you made to yourself.

[00:50:47] David Martin: This has nothing to do with me. So like in my mind and how I see it. That's what accountability is.

[00:50:55] Gabe Ratliff: Hmm. And that, it's just that to me, like that's one of the things that. I'm glad that you spoke to, because that's been such a powerful element of the coaching practice and this program that, that we're, that we're partners in is that it's been, it's been that way. You, you practice what you preach. You walk that walk.

[00:51:16] Gabe Ratliff: I mean, I remember being in my head when I was traveling and I remember having those vulnerable moments with you when you were traveling and just, and it's like having that realness is to me just so powerful because it's not this, like I've gotta be fake and put on this facade.

[00:51:37] David Martin: yeah.

[00:51:37] Gabe Ratliff: Even though you got the physique and you're, you know, you're doing the posts and, and all of the things, right?

[00:51:42] Gabe Ratliff: Like, even though you you've, you're showing up in all the ways when it's down to it and like life is happening. You you're still being real and saying like, it's cool, man. Like, like you said earlier, like yeah, some days I just, I did so many crunches or, or I'm sorry. So many squats or so many, this, so many that, you know, that's all I did today.

[00:52:03] Gabe Ratliff: It was just hydrating and that's cool. I'm still caring for myself. And it was with intention, right? Like I heard what I heard from you. And that is like, you're being intentional with yourself and checking in and taking care of yourself and also your mind, because you're, you're saying like, this is all, this is enough today.

[00:52:25] Gabe Ratliff: Tomorrow's

[00:52:26] David Martin: Yeah. I

[00:52:26] Gabe Ratliff: That's what I.

[00:52:27] David Martin: lifestyle, it's a lifestyle. And I mean, to your point, I don't know if you remember this, but like, it was so important that I checked in which you remember. We had the call from my from my bedroom back home

[00:52:40] Gabe Ratliff: your parents

[00:52:41] David Martin: you know what I'm saying? But like, it's like the thing is. I just felt like it was very important that we caught up, you know? So it's like, just to, just to push aside the facade of everything, just to be like, Hey man, what's going on? Okay. You good? All right. What, you know, where you, where's your head at? Like, cuz I felt like it was important that we did that, you know, I felt like that was a very like important time to check in with you

[00:53:14] David Martin: granted it wasn't in the space of professionalism that I would've, I tried to adhere to.

[00:53:19] David Martin: It's like I just, me like the, the communication was more important than the facade of being professional.

[00:53:27] Gabe Ratliff: And that that's it. It was enough,

[00:53:30] David Martin: Yeah.

[00:53:30] Gabe Ratliff: you know, and I, I didn't hear your moms yelling at you from upstairs.

[00:53:58] Gabe Ratliff: If you, you know, if there was like something else that you'd love to hit on or.

[00:54:03] David Martin: Yeah. You know what? I wanna talk real quick. Just about self belief, you know I've recently had this question in my mind of belief and believing in yourself and being confident. And I just wanna put out to the people that are watching this, like, you know, believe in yourself. I've had this question of, do I really believe in myself, you know, and am I confident in my abilities?

[00:54:40] David Martin: And it's more rhetorical. Like, you know, I don't, I don't need anyone to answer it for me. It's just this going back to the unlearning and learning, like, do I believe in myself? And I have an answer to that and it's, for me, it's personal. But like, I just want to express that to other people, like reflect on your belief.

[00:55:05] David Martin: Like, do you believe in yourself? You know, and whether whatever you come out to hopefully it's on the side of positive, but you know, just believe that you can do it, believe, whatever, whatever you want to achieve, believe in yourself. Don't go into it, defeating yourself from the beginning, like believe in the best possible outcome.

[00:55:32] David Martin: And this is something that has been very important to me. It's been in at the forefront of my mind. like go into something believing in yourself. We're not being delusional now. Like if you gotta put in the work you gotta put in the work, whether that be education, you know, practice, whatever you need to do, we're not, we're not living in delusion.

[00:55:52] David Martin: We're being realistic. However, like there's nothing wrong with believing in yourself, you know? And then if you don't have the skillset, believe that you can acquire the skillset, you know? So I just wanna leave people with that. Like believe in yourself, believe in your abilities. Believe that you can make positive things happen.

[00:56:18] David Martin: Believe in yourself. Don't be defeated.

[00:56:23] Gabe Ratliff: Whew. Yeah. I mean, it really comes down to, it really does come down to that because when, when I have had those days where I'm just like, I'm in my head and things, aren't going well, it's a tough day for whatever reason. And I'm just in that, in, in my head spinning. And I mean, it's, it's so common. I mean, there's just so much going on these days.

[00:56:52] Gabe Ratliff: That's just been kind of compounding and there's enough. You know, there's enough that happens in, in, in each of our own individual lives, not to mention on this grand scale happening in all kinds of places, in all kinds of ways, but to have that belief and to understand that as we've been talking about.

[00:57:19] Gabe Ratliff: What is enough and like just sticking to the program, just doing the work and like to tomorrow's another day. It's okay. Like take care of yourself, believe in yourself, trust yourself. And it's, it's all good. You're you'll still get there. It's not about how fast it's not about, you know, some record breaking weight loss or, or, you know, all this stuff.

[00:57:45] Gabe Ratliff: It's not about using the numbers as a comparison tool to get psyched out or overwhelmed. It's it's about just doing the, I mean, you've repeated this to me. It's just keep doing the work and you're doing great.

[00:57:59] David Martin: Yeah. I mean, that's the thing it's like, you're right. You know, what, what, more can you want from yourself? I mean, if you're already putting in action, you know, then I would say, if you're already putting in action, maybe you need a bit more focus, but if you're already putting in focused action, At some point you have to, you have to give yourself the space to know that, like, you know, you're, you're doing what you can with what is available to you.

[00:58:36] David Martin: Don't get me wrong. There's always ways to optimize whatever you're doing, but like, you know, be gentle with yourself. Be flexible with yourself. Watch how you're speaking to yourself. What is the voice in your own mind? How are you speaking to yourself? Is that voice, man, we gotta do this. Come on.

[00:59:00] David Martin: It's time to let's go. Let's go, man. You didn't do good enough or is it, you know what? I see you working hard, you know, good job. But you know what? Let's, let's adjust here. I feel like you can do a little bit better. So is your voice calm reassured or is your voice? Oh, you gotta, ah, you know, so like. Just be mindful of how you're speaking to yourself in your own mind. Is it calm, reassured, positive, or is it angry? Angsty, you know, demeaning, you know,

[01:02:08] David Martin: mean that's yeah. That drumming bass album represent like that. That's one of those ones that kind of put drum bass in the mainstream.

[01:02:16] Gabe Ratliff: mm. He also, he came up if I remember correctly, I used to have the metalhead VHS, which he was an artist on the metalheads, which is Goldie. I'm gonna drop some crazy music trivial on y'all right now. But Goldie has this, had this label? I think he's still going actually metalhead. It's a, it's a based outta England and Ronnie size actually was, he grew up in an orphanage

[01:02:49] David Martin: Okay.

[01:02:49] Gabe Ratliff: and he, he was fortunate.

[01:02:52] Gabe Ratliff: They actually had music instruments and they had like electronic, like analog instruments cuz back in the day that that was pretty much what it was. It was all pre you know digital audio work, and, and software and things. And and so he just started noodling around, figured out how to play music and then ended up becoming Ronnie size, this like.

[01:03:13] David Martin: That's cool.

[01:03:15] Gabe Ratliff: drum and bass legend. Yeah, it was

[01:03:17] David Martin: Yeah, that's really cool

[01:03:18] Gabe Ratliff: Yeah.

[01:03:19] David Martin: By the way, Goldie has a art gallery in Bangkok called ARU gallery. Has some really cool stuff there. So near warehouse, 34, anybody that's in Asia in Bangkok ARU gallery, a U R U M gallery. And has some pretty cool exhibits there.

Like you gotta really reflect, like, have you ever like, truly believed in yourself? You know what I'm saying? Like, have you ever had the confidence to know that you can accomplish what you want to accomplish?

[01:05:18] David Martin: You know, so for me, I had to like really like, huh, I had to really think about that. Like have I, I mean, I've been confident, but have I ever been truly a hundred percent assured that I can do something? So I just wanna leave people with that message. Like, yo, if you have a goal, like believe you can do it.

[01:05:39] David Martin: Don't. With a defeated attitude out the gate. Like you, you should have Supreme belief in your ability to attain what you want to attain. So that's why I was walking to my goals cuz it's like, I, I, believe, I believe, I can do it, you
